I'd watched K-dramas for two years, and there was one moment where those two years collapsed all at once.
The subtitles all said brother
In the dramas I watched, when a girl called a guy 오빠 (oppa), the subtitle said brother.
When a guy called a guy 형 (hyung) — also brother.
So I thought they were the same word. Just pronounced differently.
I called my Korean friend Jihun "형" for the first time. It took some nerve, too.
Three people standing next to us laughed at the same time.
See, I'm a woman
Jihun, still laughing, explained it to me. These words split by the speaker's gender — mine — not the listener's.
| What I thought | Reality |
|---|---|
| 오빠 = 형 (same word) | Different words. Different people use them |
| older guy = 오빠 | only when I'm a woman |
| older guy = 형 | only when I'm a man |
| subtitles all say brother, so whatever | the subtitles threw that information away entirely |
If I'm a man: 형 for an older guy, 누나 (noona) for an older woman. If I'm a woman: 오빠 for an older guy, 언니 (unnie) for an older woman.
Even for the very same person, what you call them changes depending on who you are. Jihun is 오빠 to me, and 형 to a guy friend of mine. Same person.
But the bigger problem was still coming
That one we laughed off. The real mistake came next.
I called someone I'd met through work 오빠 right from the start. He looked older, so.
The air got a little weird.
I heard later that 오빠 is a word you use after you've gotten fairly close. Use it on someone you've just met and it comes on way too strong. Especially at work.
The safe option was this.
You just put 씨 (ssi) after the name. No need to know their age, gender doesn't matter, and there's nothing to get wrong.
Once you're actually close, they'll be the one to say it first — "just call me 오빠." Until then, 씨 is the safe move.
Oh, but there's a trap in this one too
You can't attach 씨 to the family name alone. Say 김 씨 (Kim ssi) and it sounds kind of rude.
Either the full name, 김지훈 씨 (Kim Jihun ssi), or just the given name, 지훈 씨. One of those two.
I only learned that much later. If nobody tells you, you just keep getting it wrong.
What dramas can't teach you
Honestly, this was the most frustrating part.
No matter how many dramas you watch, you never learn who says which word to whom. The subtitles don't give you that information. 오빠 and 형 both just turn into the character's name, or "hey."
What I heard was different, but what I read was the same — so I had no way to know what the difference was.
Even now, when I meet someone new, the first thing I do is ask their name. That's what everyone does, right?
